A few weeks ago I decided to take my wife and kids to The Netherlands and visit Amsterdam. And what a great idea it was. This city (I had never been there before) was an incredible experience. It is a monument in itself (although they are doing a lot of work on a new metro line, which makes it a bit messy in the city I must say).

Anyway, first thing we did was visiting a market called Albert Cuyp (which I believe was some mariner from the good old days) and this was quite an experience. I wish we had such markets in my own country. You could really buy anything (well, almost anything) from watches to flowers and all kinds of food. You could also really see that Surinam has been a part of the Netherlands once. A lot of people from this area now live in Holland and there are plenty of them on the market selling their goods.

Next thing we did was seeing a movie in a theatre called Tuschinski’s (I hope I spell it right). Gee, this place was so nice!! Apparently it was renovated recently, but the guy in the cinema told us it was built in the late 1800′s by a guy called Tuschinski. Well, he did a remarkable job. It just breathes history this place and I have never seen a cinema like it anywhere. And I must say it was looking a lot better than the movie we saw, of which I can not even remember the title.

Right after that, we visited a square called Leidseplein, where we had a drink on one of the (heated) terraces. When you sit there, you can see all kinds of people passing by from a lot of different cultures. Amsterdam has inhabitants from 167 nationalities as we could read in an advertisement in the streetcars.

Our day today ended with a visit to a splendid restaurant called Casa Peru. It was recommended to us by some locals who had a reservation and didn’t manage to go, so we took their places. The restaurant, located along the canals, serves South American food and although the name of the dishes didn’t sound too promising, the food was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, when you go to Amsterdam, it will be hard to get to this restaurant, because you have to reserve weeks in advance. Anyway, that was Amsterdam today. Hope you visit sometime.
